Shanklin, the terminus for the unique Island electric railway which runs from the high-speed ferry terminal on Ryde Pier, shares the same bay as that of Sandown, it's neighbouring town, the pier of which can be seen from Shanklin's beaches. Shanklin's major shopping area is centered around the High street and Regent street, which has a whole variety of shops, restaurants and cafes. Shanklin old village, which lies at the bottom end of the High street, has a range of delightfull gift shops and tearooms amongst the many thatched cottages. Further down, superb sea and woodland views can be seen from Rylstone gardens dubbed the most picturesque in southern England. The gardens extend the whole southern length of Shanklin Chine The Esplanade is lined with a variety of hotels, cafe's and amusement arcades as well as Childrens play areas. The gently sloping beaches provides excellent swimming and bathing. One of the Summer highlights of Shanklin is the famous Regatta, first held in 1851, it provides traditional fun events and culminates with a fantastic fireworks display at night.
